Human Desire
One woman, two men, a murder—and, throughout it all, trains. The rhythmic clatter of their wheels lends Lang’s adaptation of Zola a tension all its own. As in the original source material, his characters are defined by an instinctive, driving propensity for violence. Unlike in a classic melodrama, no one—in their search for security—remains truly innocent; on the contrary, the harder they try to escape their predicament, the more deeply they become entangled in it.
