Honeyland
It sounds like a fairy tale – yet it is entirely real. In an abandoned mountain village high up in North Macedonia, Hatidže lives with her elderly mother, tending to wild bee colonies just asher family has done for generations following one simple rule: half the honey belongs to the humans, the other half to the bees. Her quiet daily life is thrown off balance when a nomadic extended family settles next door and attempts to turn this ancient craft into a commercial enterprise. What begins as a neighbourly encounter evolves into a quiet drama about trust, greed, and the consequences of human choices. Devoid of voice over narration or interviews, and featuring cinematography by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov – who became part of this microcosm over the course of three years – HONEYLAND exerts a powerful, immersive pull. Every shot feels meticulously composed; every encounter is surprising and authentic. The fact that this multi- award- winning documentary at times feels like great narrative cinema makes it all the more extraordinary. A fascinating cinematic experience that tells the story of bees and reveals a surprising amount about us humans in the process.
