Highway to Hofburg
HIGHWAY TO HOFBURG closely follows the transformation of a political punk provocateur into a presidential candidate.
The race for the Austrian presidency is arguably the most visible election campaign in the country. Until his candidacy in 2022, the name of Vienna punk musician Dominik Wlazny was little known. As Marco Pogo, he was known as a loud and contradictory public persona: punk musician, founder of the Beer Party, provocateur, and at the same time someone who often took political debates more seriously than his image might suggest. His candidacy becomes a projection screen for hope, rejection, connection, skepticism, and political unease.
What begins as a specific election campaign thus develops into a broader look at democracy: Who is taken seriously in politics? What role do the media and public images play? And what does it mean, in a democracy, not only to cast a vote but to have your voice heard?
