Hasenjagd – Vor lauter Feigheit gibt es kein Erbarmen
On 2 February 1945, 500 Soviet prisoners of war escaped from the Mauthausen concentration camp and sought refuge amongst the civilian population. The camp commander called on the local population to ‘hunt them down like hares’ and to execute any escapees on the spot. Risking their lives, a farming family hid two of the escaped concentration camp prisoners until the end of the war.
