Gugus Welt
Gugu loves soccer, and he loves glitter, makeup, and disco dancing. The 11-year-old lives with his spirited grandmother, Dilma, with whom he can truly be himself. This is because his father and some of his classmates make Gugu painfully aware that boys in a Brazilian village are expected to behave differently—in a more conformist and masculine way. For good reason, Gugu keeps it a secret that Grandma Dilma is becoming increasingly forgetful and confused, as he would otherwise be forced to move in with his father. At the same time, Gugu learns more about his mother’s death.
Through poetic, beautiful imagery, this touching film tells the story of a strong protagonist fighting for self-determination and acceptance in an environment that is stark—both in its landscape and its emotional climate.
GUGU’S WORLD was the big winner of the Generation Kplus section at the 2026 Berlinale, receiving both the Crystal Bear from the children's jury and the Grand Prix for Best Film in the Generation Kplus section from the international jury.
