England, late 19th century. For generations, a curse has haunted the aristocratic Baskerville family, with legend telling of a huge and bloodthirsty hound at its heart. Ever since, stories have circulated of a mysterious, eerie dog with intensely glowing eyes, said to roam the moors at night.

Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, published in 1902, captivated readers, particularly in Germany. During the silent-film era, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES made it to the big screen there twice, most recently in 1929 as a major production with an international cast. But first the arrival of sound cinema brought an end to the success of this final “silent” Holmes film, and then it seemed to disappear forever. The film itself might almost have become a legend had reels of the long-lost work not been discovered in the basement of a Polish parish in 2009.
