GOYA EN BURDEOS

At over 80 years old, the famous but now very ill painter Francisco de Goya takes stock and looks back on his life, which was marked by political upheaval, dangerous passions and an almost insatiable creative urge ... Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the Aragonese-born Saura made a film about Goya (a fellow countryman like Luis Buñuel). The connection between the three goes far beyond the geographical. They repeatedly clashed with the authorities of their respective times. Saura translates the intoxicating quality of the paintings into beguiling film images, transcending the boundaries of space and time and philosophising once again about the leitmotif of his work: how memories and reality, dream and reality merge into one another.
