Fulci Lives!

Like those creatures that have long been dead and buried in the ground, these two infamous works by the Italian ‘Godfather of Gore’ also come back to life on this evening. Fulci's cultishly revered and insane zombie roundelay, long the subject of discussions about bans, creates uncompromisingly dark worlds in which the laws of space and time are unhinged. Baroque visual and sound excesses meet Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, embedded between extreme close-ups and nightmarish set pieces, located somewhere between cheap trash and ultra-art. Just as the ‘evil’ here leaps out of nowhere, what is deep inside us literally pushes its way out. And quite often the living turn out to be the bigger monsters. (Florian Widegger)
