Fujiko
Shizuoka, 1982. During a cigarette break, Fujiko tries to sell insurance to an exhausted hotel chef. To make her case, she tells him her own story: one stormy night in the 1970s, during a power outage, her daughter Mari is born into the faint light. Her marriage soon turns into servitude in the family business, and when Fujiko asks for time to care for her baby, her husband’s family simply takes the child away from her. Only through enormous effort does Fujiko manage to get her daughter back, and she sets out to raise her on her own. No family, no job, no prospects.
What follows is a gruelling ordeal as a single mother in the late 1970s, an episodic journey from one odd job to the next. Yet the merciless hardships of a male-dominated society, which she faces as an unconventional woman, are occasionally softened by the warmth and kindness of strangers. Fujiko eventually learns that she must forge her own path to independence, free from ties and obligations.
