Fucking Different Generations

Twenty-one years ago, producer Kristian Petersen launched the now-legendary compilation film series “Fucking Different”: to have queer directors from various cities shoot short fiction and documentary films—as snapshots of ever-changing queer communities. A lot has changed since then: gender boundaries have become more fluid; young people no longer necessarily have to identify within the binary system. Yet even as young queer communities seem to have grown closer together, a generational divide is evident.

“FUCKING DIFFERENT GENERATIONS,” now the seventh installment in the series, seeks to bridge this gap: To this end, queer filmmakers from the boomer generation have made films about their visions of the lives of young queer people—while young queer filmmakers have turned their perspectives on the older generation into short films. For example, Todd Verow interviews young queer people about their cruising experiences, Jo Pollux turns a boomer into a Gen Z hipster for 24 hours, and Monika Treut explores what the generations can learn from one another. The result is a collection of seven short films that—in ways that are at times humorous, poetic, and reflective—examine the similarities, differences, and opportunities for connection between the generations in the queer world.
