Sixteen-year-old Sebastian enjoys his teenage life amidst the woods, fields, and country roads of a small town: by day he studies, while at night he winds down from sultry summer days by the lake with beer and weed—often in the company of his girlfriend. Then, Kolja—a boy his own age—suddenly enters his family’s life, ostensibly the son of a friend of his father’s who has just passed away. The boy instantly captivates everyone around him—but no one quite as deeply as Sebastian.
What follows is an emotional rollercoaster that violently hurls Sebastian—and his family—out of their everyday small-town existence. "Free at Heart", from breakout director Max Hegewald, is an intense coming-of-age drama about a love that breaks all the rules—and about feelings that no one wants to acknowledge, yet which can never be switched off.
