By the year 2030, former actress Ms. Winkler (Angela Winkler) has nothing left but her daughter Emi (Laura Tonke) and granddaughter Billie (Zoë Baier). Her beloved husband and stage partner passed away far too soon; Ms. Winkler never fully emerged from her grief, relying instead entirely on Emi. When Emi—also an actress—accepts a theater engagement and finally seeks to take charge of her own life, her mother suddenly requires intensive care following an accident, necessitating a quick solution: a care robot provided by her health insurance. Ms. Winkler feels humiliated and vehemently resists this mechanical form of care. Yet, an unexpected friendship blossoms between the 80-year-old woman and the highly "well-read" robot—whom she names Pavlovich and who, to her delight, can recite Chekhov beautifully. However, Pavlovich is not merely interesting company for Ms. Winkler; he also transmits her steadily declining vital signs to a healthcare system obsessed with efficiency. Pavlovich promises to stand by her, but can an artificial intelligence make a promise to a human that it can actually keep?
