"The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters" – del Toro prefaces his film adaptation of *Frankenstein* with the title of Goya’s famous drawing, thereby capturing its full ambivalence: this sleep is nothing less than a dream—Victor Frankenstein’s vision of using science to conquer even death. His macabre laboratory resembles a cathedral, his desire to create life is rooted in profound loss, and his initial triumph increasingly gives way to hubris. The Mexican director pursued this passion project for nearly twenty years, resulting in a visually stunning, impassioned reinterpretation of a story that reflects on what happens when humanity seeks to transcend its limits.
