Fontane Effi Briest
Prussia, late 19th century. After marrying Baron von Innstetten, who is 20 years her senior, 17-year-old Effi soon feels unloved and neglected: her husband is frequently away on business, and her new surroundings are dull and provincial. Effi eventually finds distraction in a flirtation with the young Major Crampas. This comes to an end when the couple move to Berlin, where Innstetten pursues his career. Six years later, he discovers love letters from Crampas in Effi’s possession. Unable to forgive her, he kills Crampas in a duel, disowns his wife and takes charge of the upbringing of their daughter. Ostracised by everyone, Effi wastes away.
