Fleshpot on 42nd Street

Let’s state this right off the bat: "Fleshpot on 42nd Street" has very little in common with the other films in this series—if only because, at its core, it is a melodrama. It tells the bleak, dismal story of sex workers Dusty Cole and Cherry Lane—denizens of "The Deuce" during its seediest era of peepshows, grindhouses, shooting galleries, and street prostitution; battered, yet still alive. One day, Dusty meets a guy named Bob who might just pull her out of the gutter, but... You don’t see much of The Deuce itself, yet the scenes set in smoky bars and shabby apartments give you a sense of what daily life there looked, sounded, and even smelled like back then. It has the stature of a Fassbinder film. Seriously. (Olaf Möller)
