The big winner at Cannes 2026!
Following in the footsteps of Michael Haneke, Francis Ford Coppola, and Ken Loach—Cristian Mungiu has now won his second Palme d’Or!
Since his 2007 masterpiece “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” which won the Palme d’Or, Cristian Mungiu has been a regular at Cannes. With his latest film, FJORD, he has now made a spectacular comeback, winning his second Palme d’Or. Filmed in English for the first time, the renowned Romanian filmmaker explores the fine lines between cultural identity, private life, parenthood, and moral judgment in this gripping family drama, featuring a star-studded cast including Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value,” “The Worst Person in the World”) and Sebastian Stan (“A Different Man,” “The Apprentice”).
The Gheorghius family—Catholic and Romanian—settles in a Norwegian village, the mother’s birthplace. They quickly befriend the Halbergs, who live in the neighboring house near the bay. Despite their very different parenting styles, the children of both families soon become close friends. Until the Gheorghius are suspected of harming their own children.
