The Dutchman Joris Ivens was one of the great documentarists of the 20th century and, with his multifaceted work, an important point of reference for Michael Glawogger. Our collection includes three early Ivens short films made in Korea, which, with their different approaches, show the same willingness to think and work beyond norms that also characterized Glawogger's work. Misère au Borinage is a classic of politically committed documentary film and angrily depicts the terrible conditions surrounding a strike in the Walloon coalfield. Branding is one of Ivens' rare fictions: the story of a penniless sailor who falls in love - but "filmed like a documentary, in the sense that the documentary reflects a certain reality" (Ivens). Finally, one of cinema's undisputed masterpieces: a short film poem about Amsterdam in the rain, document as avant-garde. (Christoph Huber)
