The films in this program—two directed by Tsitsi Dangarembga and one produced by her—revolve around women who rebel against social norms and patriarchal violence. "Mother's Day", a classic of Zimbabwean cinema, is based on an ancient Shona folktale and staged as a musical. "At the Water" explores the ambivalent relationship between faith and religion: the son of Netsai, a devout young Christian woman, disappears while she is washing clothes at the river. In "Spell My Name", a young teacher from the city who has come to the countryside to teach stands up for the rights of a female student. (A.P.)
