Once again, Ahwesh celebrates the pleasure of performance and improvised speech by women in its various forms: confessions, banter, gossip, memories, quotations, and experiences both lived and invented. *The Deadman*—based on a story by Georges Bataille and created with her longtime partner Keith Sanborn—stands as the exception here, featuring a clear *mise-en-scène* in captivating black-and-white and an inventive soundtrack. The film succeeds in capturing Bataille’s transgressive, poetic prose while simultaneously respecting female desire, free from the usual patriarchal tropes of pornography.
