Dabernig’s recent works reveal his gift for tragicomic observation in a state of refined perfection. *Zlaté Piesky Rocket Launch* ironically contrasts a children’s toy rocket launch and an adult fascination with simulations—set in a run-down Bratislava hotel and accompanied by Polish hip-hop—while *Pastry Friday* depicts a seemingly uneventful post-COVID Friday afternoon in a low-rise Moravian pastry shop, melancholically drowning in the rain. Such registers are familiar in Dabernig’s work, yet he is equally capable of taking a completely different approach, as demonstrated by the black-and-white study of a dental visit, *Heavy Metal Detox*: the discomfort of having fillings removed, explored within one’s own mouth.
