The second film program traces the axis of identity in Larcher’s work: from the petit-bourgeois family home (HEIM) via the emoji mask on a Sinhalese face (Dramatis Personae), the AI-recalled female portrait of the early 1990s (Me, myself and I), the anatomical-analytical landscape of skin (SELF), and the outsourcing of artistic identity to the algorithm (The Artist in the Machine), to the world premiere of Extinction Story. In the latter, Larcher takes her grandfather Josef Schreiber’s collection of bird eggs as a starting point for an essay on collections, ecological and cultural practices, death, and (re-)animation (voiceover: Michaela Bilgeri, sound: Ursula Winterauer). While the first program observes the world around us, the second turns the camera inward, discovering that the self is not a given starting point but rather an effect constructed through images, materials, algorithms, and generations.
