Rocky is a hulking brute who fucks and fights his way through San Francisco’s street-hustling scene in the most savage manner; Johnny works in a sex shop, indulging in steamy daydreams inspired by his female customers. The two storylines run parallel—at times subtly mirroring or commenting on one another—until they finally intersect at a sex party. With *Femmes de Sade*, Alex de Renzy—a grandmaster of the Golden Age of porn (who later, under the pseudonym Rex Borsky, became a key figure in "ass-powdering" videos)—delivers a dark reflection on the violent depths of male sexuality, while remaining (despite this) a turn-on. Today, this kind of ambivalence feels like a lost cultural achievement. (Olaf Möller)
