In a utopian police state, books are banned and reading is a criminal offense. Fire departments monitor suspects, track down owners of banned books, and destroy any printed material. Montag is a member of one of these hated units; he loves his job and hasn’t asked a single question in five years. Then one day he meets Clarisse, and suddenly his wife Linda—who spends her days taking pills and watching TV—seems terribly boring to him. He secretly escapes this controlled world and begins reading at night, even though he knows this could have deadly consequences…
