Everybody to Kenmure Street

From Felipe Bustos Sierra

Year 2026

Duration 119 min.

Language English

It is the morning of 13 May 2021 in Pollokshields, a district of Glasgow. As the Muslim community prepares for the end of Ramadan and a few residents set off for school and work, two migrants are detained during a raid by the UK Home Office. But the operation does not go unnoticed. Neighbours witness the raid and spontaneously rally in solidarity with those being detained. They blockade the street, crawling beneath the police van to prevent it from moving. What begins with a single person quickly grows into a mass demonstration, fuelled by the spread of news on social media, with everyone finding their own way to contribute. Local shops provide water and snacks, neighbours bring blankets and administer first aid, and the nearby mosque opens its toilets to the protesters.

The documentary combines archival footage with interviews with eyewitnesses, while selected scenes are recreated. It places this successful act of resistance against deportation within the broader history of Glasgow as a trading hub built on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade.
