Everest – Phunjo

From Bidhya Chapagain, Kamal Kumar

Year 2026

Duration 85 min.

Language Nepali

Stories about the mountains of Nepal have all too often been told by outsiders. PHUNJO is an entirely Nepalese production in which protagonist Phunjo Jhangmu Lama and her team film the expedition themselves, while foreign mountaineering tourists remain largely out of sight. At its heart are the Nepalese women and men who work on the mountain and make other people’s ascents possible. The result is an immediate and intimate perspective on Everest and the lives behind the machinery of the mountain.

Phunjo Jhangmu Lama was born in the remote Tsum Valley, where she herded yaks on the high-altitude pastures as a child. At 13, she moved to Kathmandu. Today, she is a mountaineer and Everest world-record holder. Six years after setting her first record, she is determined to reach the summit in under 20 hours. At the same time, her daughter Zing is preparing to embark on a journey of her own. Like many young people in Nepal, she hopes to leave her home country to pursue her education abroad.
