Shortly before the end of the war, five hardened veterans who have deserted from the US Army find themselves caught between the fronts in France. With the help of a runaway German soldier and a few partisans, they are tasked with stealing the warhead of a V2 rocket from the Nazis – a suicide mission. The source material for Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS once again demonstrates Castellari’s flair for action and pace, and has been trimmed by around 20 minutes in the German version – a move that has not only done the film a disservice. The same fate befell WELCOME TO HELL – a film that truly lives up to its title. For the ‘heroes’ of this drug-fuelled Italo-western, nothing is truly sacred: yet even more striking than their ruthlessness are the bizarre images and surreal, rock-infused sounds with which Canevari leaves genre boundaries far behind.
