È piccerella (Die Kleine)
Tore loves Margaretella. And this love gradually costs him everything. For his beloved loves above all life itself: beautiful clothes, attention, luxury. From a popular Neapolitan song, Elvira Notari, the most prolific Italian director of the silent film era, has crafted a passionate melodrama that, with its blend of folkloric detail and almost documentary-style street scenes, feels surprisingly modern. Margaretella is not a classic femme fatale, but a contradictory figure torn between a yearning for freedom and societal constraints. If—then as now—the Neapolitans' calling is to celebrate life, then the film conveys this effortlessly, even as the story hurtles toward catastrophe.
