The ticking that you hear again and again throughout the film comes from the director's pocket watch. Quietly but urgently, the sound sets its rhythm. It begins in the streets of Dunkirk, where scattered British soldiers flee from the Wehrmacht's machine gun salvos, continues on the beach, where British troops form up for evacuation under heavy fire, and does not stop when rescue ships set sail on the home front.
Admittedly, the film's narrative clock ticks at three different paces. The narrated time on the beach spans a week, the rescue by ship takes a day, and the Air Force squadron has fuel for only an hour to shoot down the Messerschmitt and Heinkel that inflict the worst losses on the British. It's sheer genius how seamlessly Christopher Nolan's proven editor Lee Smith makes the disparate time strands each connect to the other. However, the filmmaking is the only commando enterprise that works smoothly in "Dunkirk."
