Doppelgänger
Espionage thriller. During the Cold War, a young man is sent to Strasbourg as a special agent for the Polish secret service. There, he assumes the identity of Hans, the long-lost son of Helga—the child she gave up for adoption in Poland 30 years earlier. Shortly after his arrival, Helga passes away. Hans moves in with her brother, Helmut Steiner, and his daughter Nina. Drawn to the allure of Western life, he takes a job at a European political organization, gaining access to confidential information about the Polish community in Strasbourg and their support for the Solidarność opposition.
Meanwhile, Jan Bitner, a young patriot and engineer at the Gdańsk Shipyard, who grew up with adoptive parents, begins searching for his biological mother. Unbeknownst to him, another man—whose real name is Józef Wieczorek—is using his identity. Disguised as Hans, Józef is spying on behalf of the Polish secret service.
In this gripping psychological drama, Jan Holoubek masterfully depicts how politics can shape or even destroy the lives of ordinary people—turning the story into a riveting spy thriller.
