Music film specialist Kolm-Veltée envisions a ‘film opera’ instead of an ‘opera film adaptation’ for DON JUAN. In both the heavily abridged plot and the staging, he emphasises the contrast between the depravity of the aristocratic title character and the integrity of the simple peasantry. Purists may be disturbed by the numerous interventions, while the curious will enjoy a lavishly decorated and formidably sung interpretation.
