Once again, working with Tarantino, Waltz proves that few can match him when it comes to affable cruelty. As Dr. King Schultz—a former dentist turned bounty hunter with a social conscience—he frees the slave Django right at the start and embarks with him on a bloody campaign across the American South on the eve of the Civil War. They shy away from neither the law nor trigger-happy plantation owners... Blending the Spaghetti Western, the slavery drama, and biting social satire, Tarantino transforms historical violence into operatic genre cinema, featuring an exquisite cast that extends even to the smallest supporting roles. Yet, the evident relish for excess should not obscure the fact that some chapters of history can hardly be told in terms too graphic.
