What does a Sicilian baron do to get rid of his unloved wife and finally marry his 16-year-old cousin? That's right: he leaves no stone unturned to drive her straight into the arms of another man in order to kill the adulteress - in accordance with the law - and get away with a lenient sentence ... The possibility of divorce has only been available in Italy since 1970 - which this grotesquely dark comedy about conservative Catholicism and decadent aristocracy takes to task. In times of increasing violence against women on the one hand and the Me-Too movement on the other, the film has only become more explosive. And in the centre of it all is Mastroianni as a ‘neurotic, cunning, false and irascible provincial who is not easily forgotten.’ (Alberto Moravia) (Florian Widegger)
