In its heyday, there were over 200 cinemas in Vienna at any one time - 200 places to escape from everyday life into a world of magical exceptionalism. It is all the more astonishing that these urban dream locations have been described comparatively little. In the most comprehensive publication in its publishing history to date, the Filmarchiv Austria presents a unique documentation project based on decades of meticulous research by historians Florian Pauer and Thomas Jelinek, which provides an almost complete inventory of all the cinemas that have ever operated in this city in four volumes.

The cinema - a place of dreams and illusions, brought to life on the screen by the wish machine in the projection room. If you talk to people from "outside", they are always a little envious of Vienna and its cinema scene, to which Paul Rosdy has created a sensitive, loving monument with his film. KINO WIEN FILM tells the story of the heyday of the city's cinemas and of those who, with great effort, kept them going or still do: Idealists, fighters, workers. But it also tells of the changing times, of the challenges that operators have to face today in order to maintain the cinema as a social place, and which go far beyond the technical.
