Die Verwandlung

From JAN NĚMEC

With EINZ BENNENT, ZDENKA PROCHÁZKOVÁ, EDWIGE PIERRE, ACHIM STRIETZEL u.a.

Year 1975

Duration 55 min.

One morning, Gregor Samsa has turned into a giant beetle. Unable to communicate himself, he conversely understands every word the family say, who initially look after him but increasingly turn away. Finally, the decision is made that the vermin must go ... In this faithful adaptation of what is probably Kafka's best-known novel, the external transformation is not shown: it is left to the audience to imagine the monstrosity for themselves. All the clearer - also in the close-ups by Thomas Mauch - is the depiction of a world without compassion, in which a person becomes a leper and his death becomes ‘redemption’. Before that: Michael Kreihsl's approach to Amerika (later: Der Verschollene), one of Kafka's three unfinished novels. He interrupted his work on it for The Metamorphosis, among other things. (red)
