Unlike many US Westerns, their GDR counterparts consistently tell their stories from the perspective of the indigenous population. They combine adventure, scenic landscapes and spectacle to create parables about imperialism and colonial policy. And they make the Yugoslav actor Gojko Mitić a star. He plays the Dakota chief Tokei-ihto, who defends his people against land grabs and betrayal by white settlers.
