The tragic love story between the Jewish slave Merapi and Seti, the son of Pharaoh, against the backdrop of the biblical Exodus from Egypt: as one of its milestones, THE SLAVE QUEEN also heralds the end of the Austrian monumental film. The conflict between the master and slave peoples is developed on all levels of the film's design. The elaborate constructions, mass scenes and exuberant images of this historical drama, which rivalled the major American productions of Cecil B. de Mille, still amaze us today. (red)
