Ruth—the wife of a fabulously wealthy industrialist and a bored spouse—rekindles a long-dormant desire for Franz, an artistic high school teacher. Things go well for a time, until petty jealousies and the involvement of small-time crooks turn the love triangle into criminal chaos, transforming the story into a malicious satire of high society. A cynical game of deception unfolds, in which any means are justified to maintain the façade of respectability at all costs.
