Die linkshändige Frau

In 1976, Peter Handke published his novella "Die linkshändige Frau". Shortly thereafter, the author began adapting the text into a screenplay himself. Marianne is waiting with her young son for the return of her husband Bruno from a months-long business trip. Bruno speaks of his loneliness during his stay in Finland. In response, Marianne makes a life-changing decision: she leaves her husband and chooses a life of solitude.

Produced by Wim Wenders, whose artistic friendship with Handke has spanned more than fifty years, "Die linkshändige Frau" was filmed in the spring of 1977 at Handke's rented house in Clamart, near Paris. Conceived from the outset as a "film narrative," the adaptation stars Edith Clever and Bruno Ganz in the leading roles.
