Celie Harris (Fantasia Barrino) lives with her sister Nettie (young: Halle Bailey, adult: Ciara) in the American South at the beginning of the 20th century. At the age of fourteen, she is raped by her father and subsequently married off to Albert "Mister" Johnson (Colman Domingo), who banishes her beloved sister from the house and forbids her to ever see her again. During the decades that follow in the violent and emotionally cold marriage, Celie meets remarkable women whose own stories are interwoven with Celie's. One of these is the singer Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson), with whom a friendship develops - even though she is the mistress of "Mister". After many adversities, it is finally time for the women to take their fate into their own hands.
