Die Abenteuer des Grafen Bobby
Peter Alexander’s standing in postwar German-language cinema is roughly comparable to that of Heinz Rühmann, who until then had been regarded as the epitome of the comedic folk actor. It seems all the more telling, then, that the character with whom Alexander is most enduringly associated was originally billed as a Rühmann film. The comedy of mistaken identity revolving around the good-natured, unworldly, and charmingly naive count with financial worries, who disguises himself as a chaperone for a millionaire’s daughter, also reaches a climax in his interaction with (physician and national swimmer) Gunther Philipp, who as Baron Mucki von Kalk also plays the quirky counterpart in two highly successful sequels: “Well, there you go—no one’s saying anything, they’re just talking about it!”
