Detroit
In 1967, tensions between the police and the African American population in Detroit reached a breaking point. During a raid on a motel, several young men are held, interrogated, and intimidated—all while the city burns outside and no one knows whether help is coming or if the situation will spiral further out of control. The rooms are cramped, the heat is oppressive, and the noise from the streets outside blends with the cacophony of commands shouted by the officers. For those trapped inside, every minute becomes a struggle to preserve their own dignity, while the police officers find themselves caught in a dynamic they are no longer able to stop. "Detroit" is an unsparing indictment of American police brutality and structural racism—a film whose release, not coincidentally, aligns with the dawn of the Trump era. (Otto Römisch)
