The soul of some people seems to consist of individual, floating elements that never group themselves around a centre, and are therefore incapable of forming a unity. Such a soul torments the young composer Georg von Wergenthin, around whom Arthur Schnitzler paints a precise picture of the fin de siècle. Georg becomes involved with a young singer, but does not admit this to his friends, even when she becomes pregnant by him. Karin Brandauer's first major television film seems like a ‘faded photograph of an anaemic society’: a rich, multi-layered portrait of the Viennese bourgeoisie with a star-studded cast.
