Der Tiger von Eschnapur

From Fritz Langn

With Debra Paget, Paul Hubschmid, Walter Reyer, Sabine Bethmann, Claus Holm, Valéry Inkijinoff, Luciana Paluzzi

Year 1959

Duration 101 min.

Language German

Architect Harald Berger travels to the distant Indian princely state of Eschnapur, having been invited by Maharaja Chandra to build hospitals and schools. The beautiful dancer Seetha falls in love with the German, even though the ruler himself has already set his sights on her. Thus, the couple unwittingly becomes a pawn in the hands of malicious schemers… The opportunity to film a story he had first hoped to bring to the screen nearly 40 years earlier lured Lang back from Hollywood to the Federal Republic of Germany. Despite all the adverse circumstances, the result is a vibrant, colorful triumph. Michael Althen: "Lang jokingly referred to his India film as 'the childish tomb.' And everyone agreed with him. Yet, in doing so, they overlooked the old man’s childlike delight in the sheer mechanics of how things function. […] It is hard to imagine a purer adventure film." (Florian Widegger)
