Der Rosenkavalier

From Robert Wiene

With Michael Bohnen, Huguette Duflos, Jaque Catelain, Carmen Cartellieri

Year 1926

Duration 108 min.

Language German

Baron von Lerchenau is bankrupt. Fortunately, the newly ennobled Herr von Faninal has agreed to marry his daughter Sophie to him. Count Oktavian—the Field Marshal's lover—is chosen as the Rosenkavalier and acts as von Lerchenau's suitor. However, Sophie and Oktavian are more attracted to each other and want to prevent the arranged marriage, with the Field Marshal and her cuckolded husband also posing a challenge. Carmen Cartellieri, in the role of Annina, is certainly not without her dangers: she doesn't care whether she uncovers or invents scandals, as long as she can revel in the intrigues at court. As the representative of the morals commission, adorned with a pompous wig and a voluminous gown, she has her eyes everywhere.
