Der Pate 2 (The Godfather Part II)
After his family was murdered by the local Mafia boss in 1901, nine-year-old Vito managed to flee from the Sicilian village of Corleone to the USA, where his place of origin was adopted as his surname. Having grown into a young man, he wins the respect of the residents of his New York neighbourhood and builds up his own mafia clan. By the late 1950s, following Vito’s death, his son Michael has taken his place as head of the Corleone family. Having narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, he begins the search for the traitors within his own ranks.
The second part of The Godfather, in which director Francis Ford Coppola once again collaborated with novelist Mario Puzo, is less a sequel than an extension of the first part: in two interwoven storylines, flashbacks recount the early days of Vito Corleone and the difficulties faced by his son Michael as head of the family. The role of Vito, played in the first part by Oscar-winning Marlon Brando, was taken on by Robert De Niro. The film won six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor.
