In the early 1930s, a nameless, itinerant film narrator travels through the German countryside with his reels of film. With the advent of sound film, he himself has become a relic of a bygone era, yet he continues to try to act as a mediator between the screen and the audience. In a time of great upheaval, he sees his cinema not merely as entertainment, but as a projection screen for collective longings: a place of magic, but also of ideological pitfalls.
