Franziska ‘Franza’ Jordan has fled to her grandparents’ house in Galicia to escape her husband, who forced her to have an abortion. Her brother Martin responds to her cries for help and takes her on a journey to Egypt. Between the Nile and the desert, the layers of Franza’s psychological and physical abuse at the hands of her husband come to the fore. In her short story *The Case of Franza*, arguably her most influential text, Bachmann draws a connection between domestic abuse and fascism.
(Bianca Jasmina Rauch)

“I could imagine that the film ‘FRANZA’ might provoke a certain sense of rebellion in women who are going through or have gone through similar experiences. The knowledge that they are not alone might – perhaps – help.”
(Xaver Schwarzenberger)
