The mermaid Maila suffers under the iron rule of the Prince of the Danube, who forbids water people to swim to the surface. When she helps the barge driver Adam to cross the Danube during a storm, she is caught and condemned by the Prince of the Danube. With the help of the clumsy fish Toni, she manages to escape from prison. Together with Adam and Toni, she must now find a way to free herself from the Danube prince's shackles.
