Dear John
In DEAR JOHN, Scheugl looks back on his time as a young man in the mid-1960s. Back then, he met an American in Greece who later visited him in Vienna and wrote him longing letters from the United States—until he was drafted into the Army for the Vietnam War.
“The entire film is conceived as a dialogue across continents and decades: individual sentences or paragraphs from John’s typewritten letters, layered over the images, alternate with Hans’s present-day reflections on their friendship, his unprofitable art, and the state of the world.”
