Dawn of the Dead

“When there is no more room in hell, the dead return to earth.” Ten years after his surprise hit *Night of the Living Dead*, George A. Romero turns his attention once again to his zombies, who have now plunged the USA into a state of emergency. A couple of reporters and two soldiers have realised the hopelessness of the situation and are making a getaway by helicopter. A stopover takes them to a shopping paradise – where the undead shuffle through the aisles as ever: “This used to be an important place in their lives.” Rarely has cinema managed to blend satire, social commentary and gore so masterfully as here: both as a horror film and as a social diagnosis, it is relentless and timelessly relevant.
